Turn Boxed Cake Mix Into a Stunning Marble Cake

I wanted to give a boxed cake mix a unique twist, so I turned a simple French vanilla mix into a marble cake masterpiece. By swapping out some of the standard ingredients for richer alternatives and adding swirls of semi-sweet chocolate, this cake became decadent and visually stunning. It’s an easy yet impressive dessert for any occasion, with moist layers and a perfect balance of vanilla and chocolate flavors.

Ingredients:

  • 1 box French vanilla cake mix

  • 1 cup heavy cream (replaces water)

  • 1/3 cup canola oil (replaces vegetable oil)

  • 4 large eggs (replaces 3 eggs)

  • 4 oz semi-sweet chocolate baking bars

  • 1 cap full of canola oil (for melting chocolate)

  • Chocolate frosting (for filling)

  • Vanilla frosting (for top and sides)

  • Parchment paper (for lining cake pans)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Cake Batter:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  • Line two 9-inch cake pans with parchment paper to prevent sticking.

  • In a large mixing bowl, add in your French vanilla cake mix, heavy cream, canola oil, and eggs. Stir out the lumps in the mix.

2. Melt the Chocolate:

  • In a microwave-safe cup, combine the semi-sweet chocolate baking bars and a cap full of canola oil.

  • Microwave for 30-45 seconds, then stir until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth. Ensure there are no lumps.

3. Swirl the Chocolate:

  • Divide the cake batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans.

  • Spoon the melted chocolate evenly on top of the batter in each pan.

  • Use a toothpick to swirl the melted chocolate through the French vanilla mixture. Just randomly make some cute swirls.

4. Bake the Cakes:

  • Place both cake pans in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  • Allow the cakes to cool in their pans for about 15-20 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool for 2 to 3 hours.

5. Assemble the Cake:

  • Once the cakes are cooled, take one of the cakes and place it on a cake plate. Spread some chocolate frosting on top of that layer. Just in the middle, not the sides of the cake.

  • The second cake layer, place this on top. Spread vanilla frosting on that cake and on the sides of that layer as well as the bottom cake layer.

6. Serve and Enjoy:

  • It’s time to enjoy your slice!
