How to Make Shrimp Fried Rice with Red Cabbage Instead of Peas

I just absolutely love shrimp fried rice! This dish was a must to cook. So I gave the dish a twist. There’s no soy sauce, or any other sauces in this recipe. But I did want to give the rice a yellow color so I thought I’ve got a great idea of what to use! And of course adding in cabbage was great instead of peas. Peas are so boring to eat for me and annoying to eat with a fork.

Red cabbage shrimp fried rice

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup white rice

  • 2 cups water

  • 1-2 tsp turmeric powder

  • 2 tsp olive oil

  • 1/2 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined

  • 1 cup red cabbage, chopped

  • 1/2 cup carrots, diced

  • 1/2 cup yellow onion, chopped

  • 2 large eggs, scrambled

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

Instructions:

Cook the Rice:

  • In a boil pour in 2 cups of water along with 1-2 tsp of turmeric powder. Allow the water to boil. Stir in the rice.

  • Reduce the heat to low. Cook for 15 minutes. Fluff with a fork.

  • Chill the rice for 1-2 hours in the freezer.

Prepare the Shrimp and Veggies:

  • Take the rice out of the freezer.

  • Sit a frying pan on the burner, set to medium heat. Add the oil to the pan. Let the pan heat for 2-4 minutes.

  • Season shrimp and vegetables. First cook the shrimp in the pan for 30 seconds on each side. Remove, set aside. Now add vegetables to pan and set aside when done. Finally scrabble the eggs and set aside.

Cook the Veggies:

  • In the same pan add in the cold rice. Also pour in all the Shrimp, vegetables and seasonings. Stir to mix all the ingredients.

Serve:

  • For a fun presentation, scoop the shrimp fried rice into a small bowl, press it down gently, and invert it onto a plate to create a neat, dome-shaped rice ball.

  • To give your rice a neat or cute presentation, add some of the rice into a small bowl. Flip a plate over, sit it on top of the small bowl. Make sure that you hold both the bowl and plate firmly. Finally flip them over and lift the bowl.
